Valencia for a holiday

Just booked for me and my 2 boys (17 & 13) to go to Valencia in the summer. We are staying there for 3 nights and then want to get out of town, either in the countryside or along the coast for 4 days.
Any recommendations from you lot who are so well travelled.
Also stuff to do in Valencia. Probably going to go on the tour of the Mastia, anyone been?

I spent 4 weeks in Valencia last summer. I’ve totally fallen for the place and am saving for another visit this year.
A few recommendations...
Ruzafa, a district 10 mins walk south of the city centre, is the hip part of town. Every street corner has restaurants with outdoor seating. Just wander around there in the evenings and grab a table when you see one free.
The Bioparc is a zoo unlike any other I have visited. It’s been designed so that you feel like you’re walking through the animals habitat, without any fences or barriers etc. Feels more like a safari on foot.
The city of arts and sciences is spectacular to look at, and you can wander through it in half an hour. Not really worth going inside though, unless you’ve got time on your hands.
The aquarium is the biggest in Europe, with dolphin shows etc, probably compares to some out in America. The queues for tickets are huge every day to get in, but you can simply buy tickets on your phone and flash them at the gate for instant entry.
The best thing we did was book a private Segway tour during our first couple of days. For a couple of hours, they sped us around the entire city, through the riverbed and around the city of arts and sciences, all whilst getting a history of the tour. Would be great for teenagers.
The city beach is your run of the mill city beach, full of deck chairs and rammed during the summer. If you just fancy a paddle and a beer at the beach, then it’s fine. But if you want something a little more special, get the no 190a (the yellow bus) to El Saler. 15 mins out of the city, the most beautiful empty beach with hardly anyone around. There’s a small cafe next to the bus stop, to stock up on provisions.
A little further past El Saler is El Palmar, where you can book a boat tour on the Albufera lagoon. This is where the rice is grown for paella, which Valencia is famous for. El Palmar is a good shout for a traditional paella, in the heart of where it was created.
If you have a car or can rent one, I recommend a good day trip to Montanejos. There are natural springs here up in the mountains and you can swim up the river and explore caves. 10 minutes further up the road, with no one around, is the most powerful water spout, blasted out of a hole in the cliff side, from a reservoir on the other side of the mountain. You can walk right up next to it, and get covered in spray, with rainbows everywhere. Have never felt so powerless to the force of nature. Quite memorable.
You’ll see tapas on the menu at plenty of places, but Valencia doesn’t do little tapas plates like you’ll get elsewhere in Spain. Instead, it’ll be a pretty big plate. So just order one plate per person and that’s your meal sorted.

Oh, would recommend the open top bus. You can hop on and off at all the places I mentioned and you can normally use them for two days. Btw it will be bloody hot in the summer so make sure your hotel has aircon.

It depends on what you’re looking for in Valencia really. There’s a great beach with a nice promenade. Lots of restaurants, shops, etc. overlooking the beach.
You’ve also got the old town around the cathedral with lots of restaurants and bars along with the shops.
Finally there’s the old river bed that has been turned into a park. You can wander through there and visit the oceanarium, planetarium and museum which your 13 year old might appreciate.
Valencia is also well connected by rail to pretty much all of the med coast so work out what you and the kids want to do/see and book train tickets in advance.
Finally, Valencia is very Spanish so don’t expect loads of people to be speaking English like you would have in a holiday resort. It’s also the home of paella which has rabbit (bones n all) in it. It is very tasty if you’re a paella lover.
